April Fool’s Day can be fun… unless your impulsive ADHD brain plays tricks on you. As a kid, I played an awful joke on my sister or so it is shared amongst my family every year. I don’t remember pulling this prank, but I am reminded year after year of the payback I got for it. Everyone else seems to think it is hilarious. Let’s just say the April Fool’s lie I told still haunts me. And, this is not my favorite day of celebration.
Do you have moments that have stuck with you? Old stories that seem to get replayed regardless of the newer version of yourself that is working to be better. Ever blurted something out before thinking of how it will be received, hit “buy now” a little too fast, or jumped into a plan before thinking it through? We’ve all been there. When you have ADHD, it can have an even more significant impact on your state of thriving. But today, no jokes—just three quick hacks to help you pause before you pounce:
1️⃣ The 3-Breath Reset
Before reacting, take three slow breaths—inhale for four, hold for four, exhale for six. This simple trick hijacks your nervous system and buys your brain a second to choose, not just react.
2️⃣ “Would Future Me Approve?” Test
Before making a snap decision, ask: Would the me of tomorrow be grateful… or groaning? If it’s the latter, hit pause.
3️⃣ The 5-Minute Rule
Feeling the itch to act right now? Set a 5-minute timer. Use that time to walk, stretch, or doodle—anything that lets your brain cool off. Often, the urge passes, or you gain clarity.
🎁 Bonus Hack: Put Something Cold on Your Neck
I can’t help it. Brain science gets me every time. Sounds weird, but trust me—holding an ice pack, cold glass, or even running cold water over your wrists activates your vagus nerve. This sends a signal to your brain to slow down, making it easier to pause before impulsively acting. Try it and thank me later!
No pranks here—just real tools to help you outsmart impulse and take back control. Try one today and see how it feels! You do YOU! Pausing will help you soar to your greatest version yet💫
I look forward to exploring the next common thread that touches ADHD lives and sharing in more depth!
